I’ve never been one to follow the rules when it comes to fashion. Isn’t that what style is all about? It should be personal, tailored to you (pun intended). The clothes themselves speak to that notion. No one blouse or dress will fit ten people the same. Even more telling, each individual will style it completely different than the next. Over the years, I’ve learned the importance in dressing for no one but yourself. You should never wear something based solely on the opinion of others. What do you like? What do you want to wear and how do you want to wear it? Being true to yourself – that’s style.
Each and every one of these antiquated fashion rules has one notable thing in common. You should break it.
1. NEVER WEAR WHITE AFTER LABOR DAY

JACKET | BB DAKOTA c/o L+P (click here for $30 off your first purchase) (also eyeing this babe that’s on major sale!)
SUNGLASSES | URBAN OUTFITTERS
SNEAKS | CONVERSE
PURSE | MARC JACOBS (similar here and here)
2. “MOM JEANS” AREN’T COOL
3. YOUR BRA SHOULD NEVER SHOW
“Mom jeans” are now a staple to most of our wardrobes. We should actually thank our moms for this one. There’s nothing better than a vintage pair of high-waisted jeans passed down from your mom. Also, does anyone honestly enjoy wearing a bra? Enter: the lace bralette. A comfortable take on a bra that’s not just okay to show through, it’s modish.
4. NAIL COLORS ARE SEASONAL
5. NO MIXING SILVER AND GOLD
6. NEVER WEAR DENIM ON DENIM
7. SNEAKERS ARE ONLY FOR THE GYM
Another thing all of these fashion don’ts have in common: today, they have become more than just acceptable… they’ve become trends. The Canadian Tuxedo is now such a classy and effortless look, and sneakers are a dress’s best friend.
8. NO MIXING PRINTS AND PATTERNS
9. EVERYTHING MUST MATCH, ESPECIALLY YOUR BAG AND SHOES
10. NEVER WEAR BLACK WITH BROWN
11. NEVER WEAR NAVY WITH BLACK
Does navy pair better with anything more than black? I’ve been breaking these two rules as long as I can remember. And in the words of Queen B, I ain’t sorry. There’s something chic about that perfect combination of moody and dark colors.
